Kurochan, Bodrum, Turkey

I love Japanese. Once, I spent 5 days in Paris and just ate japanese. When exploring a new city I do my homework and sniff out the best japanese restaurants there are to make sure I get my weekly dose of fresh sashimi and maki. So when I found out one of my favourite japanese restaurants in London opened a sister restaurant in Turkey my tastebuds starting doing backflips with excitement.

Kurochan brings contemporary Asian-style dining to The Mandarin Oriental, Bodrum. The restaurant has a pop-up relaxed feel to it, that is buzzy and full of life. It’s new. It’s cool and it’s a must-visit attraction when staying at The Mandarin Oriental or visiting Bodrum.

Those visiting from London may be familiar with the name or logo. That’s because Scott Hallsworth, renowned Aussie chef has already taken London by storm with the opening of his two Kurobuta restaurants in Marble Arch and Kings Road Chelsea (Hot tip to any stalkers out there: You can find me at Kings Rd at least twice a week!).

Just like its sister restaurant, Kurochan is one of my most favourite dining experiences. Inspired by the traditional Izakayas of Japan, Kurochan serve a range of tapas style dishes including the classics – sushi and sashimi, tempuras, fresh fish, seafood and steaks. Alongside a selection of fun, ‘junk-food Japanese’ – the salmon sashimi pizza and grilled hot wings. Although in my eyes it’s Japanese – so it’s healthy.

One of the best things about this restaurant is the ambiance and atmosphere. Kurochan overlooks the resort’s main beach – si watching the sunset here is magical. The place has a really cool vibe to it and the open kitchen creates a very welcoming feel.

SWEET POTATO AND SOBA-KO FRIES WITH DIPPING SAUCES – A MUST!

Plates are small and made for sharing so you get to enjoy the food with your company and a variety of it. The food is so fresh and you can tell quality is a huge part of the restaurant’s ethos. The atmosphere and staff are very relaxed yet the food has the eagle eye for detail.

Start the night off with a cocktail watching the sunset over the Aegean sea. I recommend ‘The Green Buzzard’, which includes Midori, Cucumber, Beefeater and Lime.

If that one went down a treat then go for the Kendall St Fizz which is delightful. It includes Aperol, Beefeater and Passionfruit.

Also a must is the flamed edamame and miso.

Coffee on the beach at The Mandarin Oriental.

If you are planning a trip to Bodrum The Mandarin Oriental is the place you want to be staying. But even if you can’t score a room there – make sure you make a reservation at Kurochan. Highly recommended.
