A book to read, Black Ice, Becca Fitzpatrick

So I’ve never done a ‘MUST READ’ post before but after reading this book I really wanted to share it with you. So if you are thinking of what book to purchase to read on your next vacation or just want to laze around with a new book at home – definitely give this one a look.

Best-selling author Becca Fitzpatrick’s new novel, Black Ice, is an intense read. It is a novel that could be described as many things- a romantic thriller, a psychological drama, a twisted love story- it simply cannot fit one genre.

Before even reading the first page I was intrigued by the premise of this book. Having read the Hush, Hush series I was expecting an epic love story, not a fearful thriller that doesn’t revolve around romance but instead a strong female heroine trying to save her own life. It’s a refreshing premise.

In the story, Britt and her best friend Korbie plan to go hiking for the week. Everything is going to plan until Britt learns that her ex-boyfriend, Calvin, will be coming along too. On their way up the mountain the girls become stranded in a freak snowstorm and must take refuge in a cabin owned by two young guys. Before they even know it, the girls are taken hostage and it is up to Britt to use her trekking skills to guide everyone off the mountain.

It’s incredibly difficult to like certain characters in the book- Korbie isn’t loyal, Calvin is a jerk, Mason is confusing and Britt can’t make up her mind. One second you’re rooting for Britt, the next you want to scream at her! However, by the end of the book, you aren’t quite ready to leave the characters behind…and that’s a sign of good writing. Sometimes authors find it difficult to give their heroes flaws but Fitzgerald gives Britt just enough to make her real and relatable.

I’d recommend this book to girls from the age of 14 and up because it does deal with mature themes. It’s a story where the girl is the heroine and needs to use her intelligence and skills, not simply her body and beauty, to save her life and I think that’s an important message for young women to realize in adolescence.

So there you have. My first ‘MUST READ’ post. Let me know your thoughts on the book – would love to hear what you think.
